The Vineyard
Our two hectare vineyard is part of the larger family farm located at Blampied near Daylesford approximately 100km north west of Melbourne. The 80 hectare farm produces a wide range of organic produce including mixed vegetables, cereals, sheep, cattle and small quantities of fruit and nuts.
The vineyard was established in 1994 on rich volcanic soils with close-plantings of the premium Burgundian varieties Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
No synthetic chemical fertilisers, herbicides, insecticides or systemic fungicides are used in the vineyard. Instead, preventative spray programs using natural copper and sulphur control mildews, thermal flame weeding keep the weeds under control and beneficiary predatory insects help to naturally control insect pest populations.
Chemicals have not been used at Captains Creek for over 20 years due to growing concern over pollution to our land and water resources from artificial fertilisers and pesticides. Captains Creek farm produces healthy food and wine on a sustainable basis aiming to conserve our natural resources for our future generations.
